Venn Smyth Bio
Unashamedly pop with a strong message, Venn Smyth writes songs that dance around subjects and stories important to him. These include identity, queerness, community and finding your voice. He currently lives in London and alongside writing and performing, teaches and works with young people, including leading LGBTQ+ youth music projects.
He grew up in rural Central Scotland and found himself captivated by music and words from an early age. More interested in making up new tunes than learning the scales, he eventually knuckled down and went on to study Classical Music at Edinburgh Napier University, with saxophone and composition as his focus. However, song writing always stuck, and he found further inspiration in the eclectic worlds of Rufus Wainwright, Prince, Laura Marling and Erasure to name but a few. Having performed in various bands and releasing music under different guises over the years, this new work delivers a culmination of experience, introducing Venn Smyth at his most honest, playful and clear.
They Come for You - released 23 October 2020
Danceable, eighties-inspired synth-pop bursts out of Venn Smyth’s latest single ‘They Come for You’. With lyrics inspired by the post-war poem by Martin Niemöller “First they came...”, it is music with a message for today.
This is the third single released by the queer pop artist, produced by Jack Gourlay of Ferocious Productions. ‘They Come for You’ was written in the studio before Covid-19, when discussing the experience of being gay, white privilege and the climate crisis. The song’s message of speaking out and standing up for others feels even more important today.
Available on Spotify, Apple Music and other online stores.
Sunrise - released 7 August 2020
The unashamedly pop Venn Smyth, releases ‘Sunrise’ – a summer bop with catchy chorus, ripe for reflecting and dancing in equal measure.
Uplifting eighties throwback sounds and a full pop chorus give life to ‘Sunrise’, a song which tackles the experience of grief. Its poetic lyrics explore this universal yet deeply personal experience through the eyes of someone supporting another who has lost a loved one.
Queer pop artist Venn Smyth wrote this song whilst supporting his partner who was grieving the loss of his Mum. It was written on the island of Gran Canaria, further influencing the metaphor and imagery in the lyrics.

Burn Me (Ben Howell Remix) - released 26 June 2020
Glasgow-based DJ Ben Howell shot to online fame and then quickly the radio airwaves with his mash-up of Dua Lipa's ‘Hallucinate’ and the BBC News Theme.
With Dua herself proclaiming it was indeed 'a bop, as it were', the bar was set high for the next remix. As it happens, he didn't need to look far. Venn Smyth grew up next door to Ben in rural Central Scotland and upon seeing Ben on the news, got in touch to congratulate him. Ben heard Venn’s piano-based ballad Burn Me, and knew he had found his next project. Created remotely over Zoom during lockdown, the new summer-ready remix of Burn Me was created. Full of extra bop, of course!

Burn Me – single released 17 April 2020
An emotive piano-based ballad, Burn Me explores what it means to lose confidence in yourself. We can often lose the carefree attitude we had as children and realise that we have built walls up for ourselves, or had others build them for us. This song invites the listener to burn down some of those walls to move forward.
Available on Spotify, Apple Music and other online stores.
The official music video was created with the kindness of fans, friends and other artists submitting videos of themselves enjoying little moments outside. Whilst the song tackles grief, the video celebrates life.
The official music video is set in a primary school, showing Venn Smyth running wild in the corridors and dancing in an empty hall. Reliving some difficult memories for anyone queer at school, but now feeling free to do what he couldn't do then.
Praise and plays for Burn Me
“Time to slow things down. London-based singer and songwriter Venn Smyth has just unveiled his brand new single titled Burn Me, a captivating piano-based ballad! Venn Smyth writes songs that dance around subjects and stories important to him. These include identity, queerness, community and finding your voice.
What drew me towards this song was the lush and emotive piano-based ballad that creates quite an intimate atmosphere that is perfect for his message to soar. Another thing I really like is Venn's powerful vocal delivery and how it is packed with so much raw emotion, instantly making the song sound even better. I can completely relate with Burn Me's message about losing the confidence one had when younger and that in order to find it again we should burn some of the walls we've built up. I am a sucker for stripped-back, piano-based ballads with powerful vocals and lyrics and Burn Me is definitely a great example of that.”

“Really wonderful. Reminiscent of the kind of songs Justin Vivian Bond would sing, reminded me of short bus, Rufus Wainwright, Jake Shears. A very downtown NYC queer feel about it.”
